SYNOPSIS

The car journey wouldn’t be possible without the tires or the EV battery; the ball game couldn’t happen without the stadium lights or the LED bulbs; and your meal wouldn’t get served without the trucks and container ships that transported the ingredients to our shores.

From simple foods like tomatoes to complex tech like smart phones, products arrive on shelves in nearby stores as if by magic – but how do they get there? How do we feed and clothe the world? How do manufacturers in Germany make surgery possible in the USA? How do miners in Chile help the transition to electrical vehicles happen? It’s the greatest miracle of the modern world and so complex few understand it. This series, which blends history and science, shows you how it happens – we’re going to show you how the world works.

Every episode of this documentary series explores one relatable everyday event – like a ball game or a car journey – and then tells the story of the key items that made it happen. Because each event is the final link in a chain that stretches around the world, connecting hundreds of people across dozens of countries, all involved in the production of myriad components and materials that – together – made this one moment possible.
